Initially a monastic property in its majority, the land of 1.763 hectares on which the resort is built came into the possession of Giannis Carras at the end of the 1960s.
Construction work on Porto Carras resort commenced in 1973, bringing about a true revolution in Greece's tourist and cultural image.
Within 3 years the area radically changed thanks to the marsh drainage scheme, huge numbers of trees which were planted, the creation of an olive grove of 45,000 olive trees and of a vineyard covering 47.500 hectares.
One of Greece's most modern wineries was built amid the vineyards, capable of producing 2,500 tons of white, rose and red wine.
The resort developed around the marina which can now accommodate more than 315 boats.
A motorway of 60 km links Porto Carras Grand Resort with Thessaloniki (120 km)and with the nearby village of Neos Marmaras (2 km).
